Contents of the “behavior observation” test

During the test, children are asked to play together and create a group project. This gives teachers the opportunity to observe how they behave in a group and see whether they cooperate with the peers, how much they display their individuality and whether they use their knowledge to help others.
The style of the test differs depending on the elementary school. However, at the majority of schools, children are put into small groups with children that they have not met before. In some schools, mothers are asked to participate and in other schools only the children participate. However, whichever the style, the purpose of the test is to observe how children behave so how your child is disciplined and his/her experiences at home will be important.

Tips for preparing your child for the test

1.Encourage your child to play with children he/she has not met before

At the majority of entrance exams, children are put into groups with children they are meeting for the first time. If your child is shy and afraid to interact with people that he/she does not know, he/she will get nervous and may be unable to perform his/her best during the exam. It is a good idea for parents to give their children the opportunity to play with children that they are meeting for the first time at the park and community center so they can practice playing with new people. Children who attend mommy and me classes from a young age are more social and tend to enjoy meeting new people and making new friends. So that he/she can practice for the test, it is important that you give your child plenty of opportunities to play with new people. It is also important to teach them how to take turns and problem solve together which are skills that children learn during mommy and me classes.

2.Encourage him/her to share stationery goods and art materials with others

Some schools require children to participate in a group art project during the exam. In this case, there may not be enough glue sticks and scissors for everyone. When doing art projects at home or during mommy and me classes, it is important to let your child practice sharing the stationery goods and art materials with other children or family members. It is also a good idea to practice asking your child what he/she is making or drawing since teachers will most likely do this during the exam.

3.Encourage your child to interact with adults that he/she has not met before

At the test site, children will see not only children they have not met before but also many adults, such as elementary school teachers, that they are meeting for the first time. To prevent your child from becoming shy in front of these strangers it is a good idea to attend classes and take him/her to public play areas where he/she can play with new people on a regular basis. It is often difficult for children to play in a new place with children and adults that they do not know. However, at mommy and me classes and daycare, children will learn how to play and behave properly in a group of strangers.

Parents can help their child prepare for the “behavior observation” test in daily life

Asking your child to help around the house (setting the table, folding the laundry, etc.) will help them learn how to become independent and the importance of working as a team. For children to be able to play their role within the group appropriately, it is important that they have self-initiative and are cooperative. Let’s give our children a role at home and encourage him/her to think about his/her actions.
