How to teach your child the difference between right and wrong

2017.07.28

Small children cannot tell the difference between right and wrong. Therefore, they often do bad things or hurt each other. When this happens, how should parents react and teach them the difference between right and wrong. In this article, we will discuss how to teach your child about right and wrong effectively and what you should be careful about.

1.Parents should act as a role model

Children observe their parents and siblings and determine what is OK to do and what they should avoid doing based on what they see happening around them. It is important that we give them the right examples to follow. The actions of their mom, who they are usually with the longest, play a large role in determining which actions are good and which should be avoided. It is important that mothers set a good example and consider what is right and wrong when taking actions.

2. Explain why certain actions are “wrong” in detail

Of course it is important to discipline children when they do something dangerous or something that bothers those around them. However, just scolding your child and telling him/her that they are a bad boy/girl or that they shouldn’t do something only hurts their feelings and makes them feel bad about themselves. It is important that parents take the time to explain carefully what they did wrong and why it was wrong.

For example, when they are running in the street, it is important to look your child in the eye and explain that if a car comes out suddenly they may get hit and get hurt or die.

3. Explain that “mom will be sad” so that they can understand how others feel

Taking or breaking a friend’s toy is something that often happens when children play with each other but many times the child who performed the action does not know that they did anything wrong. When children still don’t understand how others feel it is hard for them to realize that they did something wrong. Parents should explain that “if you use your friend’s toy so roughly you might break it which will make him/her sad. If I was your friend I would be really sad.” This will help your child learn how to take into consideration the feelings of others and recognize when they do something wrong.

4. Don’t scold too much

Children are full of curiosity they try many new things and often fail on their first try which may cause them to hold in their true feelings. It is understandable that parents caution their children a lot when they are worried. However, if children receive too many warnings from their mother they will stop listening and it will be hard to communicate the important information.

It is a good idea for parents to limit warnings to when “their child does something dangerous” and to when “they do something that will bother or harm others”.

Many parents are worried that their child will not learn the difference between right and wrong. But children learn social skills and how to make decisions about their actions based on their daily experiences. It is important that parents tell children when they do something bad but failure is an important part of growing up. Let’s work to encourage our children’s curiosity and praise them for their good actions and scold them for their bad actions appropriately. This will protect them and enhance their development.
